George Peppard was an American actor whose career spanned theater, film, and television from the 1950s onward. Trained in dramatic arts, he rose to prominence in film with Home from the Hill (1960) and gained international recognition opposite Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961). He then established himself in leading roles in commercial pictures such as The Carpetbaggers (1964). In the late 1960s and through the 1970s, Peppard successfully moved into television, starring in the mystery series Banacek as millionaire investigator Thomas Banacek, a role that increased his profile with TV audiences. In the 1980s he became widely associated with Colonel John “Hannibal” Smith, the charismatic leader of the team in The A‑Team, an action series that left a mark on pop culture of the era. Beyond acting, he had formal theater training and radio experience; he was also a pilot. His career is remembered for its versatility across stage, screen, and series, and for iconic characters that secured him a recognizable place in postwar American audiovisual culture.
