George Woodcock was a prolific Canadian writer, noted for his work in poetry, essays, literary criticism, biography, and history. He became a central figure in the intellectual life of the 20th century by founding, in 1959, a periodical devoted to the country’s literature and by publishing studies that synthesized political and cultural currents, among which Anarchism (1962) stands out as one of the major syntheses on anarchist thought.
His biographies and critical studies covered thinkers such as Proudhon, Godwin, and Kropotkin, and literary figures including Orwell and Aldous Huxley; on Orwell he wrote The Crystal Spirit (1966), an award-winning work that consolidated his reputation as a critic. He held anarchist and pacifist convictions from youth, positions that shaped both his writing and his conduct during the Second World War, when he was a conscientious objector.
A lecturer at the University of British Columbia from the mid-1950s, he continued to publish poetry, travel writing, and essays, and to promote humanitarian causes: late in life he devoted himself to the Tibetan issue, founding an organization to support refugees and cultivating ties with the Dalai Lama. He refused several state honors, accepting only awards of personal or community origin, a stance consistent with his critical outlook.
