Georges Franju was a French filmmaker known for both documentary work and authorial fiction. Trained in scenography, he worked on sets for music halls before becoming involved in preserving and promoting film history: he was a cofounder of the Cinémathèque Française and took part in editorial projects and film clubs that shaped French film culture in the 1930s and 1940s. In the years after World War II, Franju made a series of powerful documentaries that confronted industrial modernity and the memory of war. Films such as Le Sang des Bêtes (1949) and Hôtel des Invalides (1951) turned official commissions into visual critiques of industrialism and military glorification, revealing an aesthetic concerned with shock and reflection. From 1958 he moved into fiction, gaining prominence with La Tête contre les murs and most notably Les Yeux sans visage (1960), a horror film that blends visual rigor, surrealist influence and documentary techniques to intensify its disturbing effect. His filmography engages with surrealism, expressionism and scientific cinema, privileging the image as the primary material of the author. Recognized for his role as a visual author and guardian of film memory, Franju left a legacy that spans genre cinema and the French documentary tradition; near the end of his life he returned to the Cinémathèque Française as honorary artistic director.
