Georges Lemaître was a Belgian Catholic priest, physicist and mathematician whose work transformed modern cosmology. A professor at the Catholic University of Louvain, he applied Einstein’s general theory of relativity to show that the universe could be expanding; in 1927 he derived the relation between galaxy distance and recessional velocity and published the first estimate of the constant now known as the Hubble–Lemaître constant.

In 1931 he proposed the “primeval atom” hypothesis, a precursor to what became known as the Big Bang model, and was a pioneer in formulating testable predictions that linked theory to astronomical observation. He worked with figures such as Arthur Eddington and played a decisive role in making cosmology an observationally driven discipline.

Beyond theoretical contributions, Lemaître introduced numerical methods and computing equipment at his university and developed important solutions of the field equations, such as the Lemaître–Tolman metric. Recognized internationally, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize and left a lasting legacy in the understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe.
