Georges-Pierre Seurat was a French painter and a pioneer of pointillism (divisionism), a movement that reshaped the study of color and technique at the end of the 19th century. Trained in the classical academic tradition at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Seurat combined poetic sensitivity with intellectual rigor, developing a systematic method based on preparatory studies and the separation of colors into dots and touches that combine optically.

His best-known work, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–1886), became an icon of Neo-Impressionism and signaled a significant shift toward a more structured, theoretical form of painting. Alongside figures such as Paul Signac, Seurat sought to transform the Impressionist legacy into something more enduring and ordered, drawing on reflections about mosaic and color theory.

Although his career was brief, his output—consisting of large, carefully planned canvases and meticulous studies—influenced later generations and contributed to debates about art, the science of vision, and pictorial modernity. Works such as Bathers at Asnières, Le Chahut, and The Circus illustrate both his technical ambition and his lasting impact on the history of painting.
