Gerard Adriaan Heineken was a Dutch businessman known for founding, in 1863, the brewery that would become Heineken International. By acquiring the Hooiberg brewery in Amsterdam, he launched an enterprise that grew from a local producer into an internationally recognized brand over subsequent generations.
His entrepreneurial initiative laid the groundwork for a company that, under successors such as his grandson Freddy Heineken, expanded decisively in the 20th century. The firm diversified its operations, adopted modern industrial processes and established a strong presence in the Netherlands, retaining historic sites that later became part of its institutional memory, such as the building that originated the Heineken Experience museum.
Gerard Heineken’s legacy lies in creating a family business structure capable of evolving into a global group. The founding of the Amsterdam brewery marked the starting point of a course that, over more than a century, produced one of the world’s largest brewing companies, with industrial and commercial presence in numerous countries.
