Gérard d'Aboville is a French adventurer and yachtsman who became known as the first man to row solo across two oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific. In 1980 he crossed the Atlantic from Cape Cod to Brittany—about 3,500 miles covered in 72 days—after already having experience in boatbuilding and organizing regattas. In 1981 he was awarded the Silver Olympic Order.
In 1991, at age 46, he completed a transpacific crossing of 134 days, departing Japan and arriving in the state of Washington. His 26‑foot boat, nicknamed “Sector,” was built of Kevlar and fitted with a self‑righting capsize recovery system, a solar panel to recharge the radio, sleeping shelter and a basic galley; he faced waves up to 12 meters and winds around 130 km/h, covering roughly 6,000 miles in total.
He later commanded, between 2010 and 2012, the Tûranor PlanetSolar, the first solar‑powered yacht to circumnavigate the globe, and currently sails the vessel under the flag of the Race for Water Foundation, dedicated to protecting the oceans from plastic pollution. As a public figure, he represented voters in Parliament from 1994 to 1999, serving on the Fisheries Committee, and was elected to the Paris Council in 2008 for the UMP.
