Gerard Kornelis van het Reve was one of the leading postwar Dutch writers, often mentioned alongside Willem Frederik Hermans and Harry Mulisch as members of the “Great Trio” of Dutch literature. His work, characterized by naturalistic realism and a style that blends erudite biblical language with colloquial speech, reached a wide readership from the 1960s and 1970s with titles such as Op weg naar het einde and Nader tot U. Reve recurrently explored themes such as sexuality—especially homosexuality—and religion, treating erotic acts almost as rites and seeking a transcendental meaning through them. He stated that the central message of his work was the salvation of the material world, advocated a symbolic reading of religion, and separated religious truths from empirical facts. His career was also marked by scandals and legal cases: he faced obscenity and blasphemy charges in the famous “Donkey Trial,” and was a controversial figure for provocative positions and gestures and for occasional statements of a racist or shocking nature. His conversion to Catholicism did not diminish his ironic, iconoclastic tone, and his ideas—ranging from criticism of communism to reflections on faith and language—left a lasting impact on Dutch literary culture.
