Gerd Bucerius was a German politician, lawyer, and journalist, best known as one of the founders of the weekly Die Zeit. Trained in law, he defended Jewish clients professionally during the Nazi era and maintained an oppositional stance toward the regime, a position that shaped his career and ethical commitments.
After the war, Bucerius participated in the political restructuring of Hamburg with British support, playing a notable role in the democratic transition. In 1949 he was elected to the first Bundestag of West Germany, combining parliamentary work with an active role in the press and the cultural life of the public sphere.
As a journalist and publishing entrepreneur, his most enduring contribution was the creation of Die Zeit in 1946, a title that became a benchmark for intellectual and political debate in postwar Germany. His legacy includes the defense of civil liberties, the rebuilding of democratic institutions, and the strengthening of a critical press.
He died in Hamburg in 1995, leaving a reputation as a central figure in twentieth-century German politics and journalism.
