Gerhard Georg Bernhard Ritter was a German historian who held the chair of History at the University of Freiburg from 1925 to 1956. Trained at the universities of Munich, Heidelberg and Leipzig, he became known for his biography of Martin Luther (1925) and for studies on the Prussian tradition and German political figures such as Karl vom Stein. His work treated history as an instrument of political education for elites, emphasizing the greatness and continuity of the German state.

A committed monarchist and member of the German People’s Party during the Weimar Republic, Ritter criticized both liberal democracy and totalitarianism, defending authoritarian forms of government and German national interests. Influenced by Lutheranism, he read Luther as an example of the “eternal German” and argued that state action should be guided by the moral character of leaders rather than by abstract moralism.

Under the Nazi regime he clashed with its policies and was even arrested in 1944. After the war he worked to reclaim a German nationalism disentangled from Nazism and opposed arguments that attributed collective responsibility to Germany. He received international recognition, becoming an honorary member of the American Historical Association in 1959.
