Gertrud Baer was a German activist of Jewish origin who devoted her life to women’s rights and the peace movement. Trained as a teacher, she became one of the founders and a long‑time leader of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), serving in executive positions in the German section from 1921 and, from 1929, as co‑chair of the international organization until 1947. During World War II she assumed practical leadership of the movement, maintaining contacts and coordinating communications among the international sections. Persecuted by the Nazis, she went into successive exile in Czechoslovakia, Geneva and the United States, where she became a naturalized citizen in 1940; after the war she returned to live in Geneva. As WILPF’s first consultant to the United Nations, she served until 1972, advocating issues such as disarmament, refugees’ rights, investigation of the health effects of atomic tests and the replacement of nuclear power with solar energy. Her legacy lies in building and sustaining international women’s networks for peace and in linking feminist activism with civil diplomacy in a century marked by wars and displacement.
