Gertrude Ederle was an American competitive swimmer, Olympic champion, and world-record holder in multiple events during the 1920s. Discovered at a young age by the Women's Swimming Association, she became known for her mastery of the crawl and for setting dozens of national and world records, as well as for winning the gold medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay at the Paris Games (1924) and two bronze medals in individual events. Her most famous achievement came on August 6, 1926, when she became the first woman to swim the English Channel, completing the Cap Gris-Nez–Kingsdown route in 14 hours 34 minutes. The crossing not only established a sporting record but turned Ederle into a media icon: she received a huge reception in New York, appeared in shows and films, and gained international fame. After retiring from professional competition, she worked as a swimming instructor for deaf children and retained institutional recognition, including inductions into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Her legacy endures in events and venues that bear her name and celebrate her contribution to the history of women's swimming.
