Giacomo Puccini was one of the most important Italian opera composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose work remains central to the international lyrical repertoire. Born in Lucca, he came from a family with a long musical tradition and graduated from the Milan Conservatory, where he developed a style characterized by vocal drama, rich orchestration and strong expressive effects. His success began with Manon Lescaut (1893) and was consolidated by a sequence of works that became landmarks of the lyric stage: La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot, as well as cycles such as Il trittico. Many arias from these operas — for example, passages from La Bohème and Turandot — achieved wide cultural diffusion. Puccini moved between verismo and the post-Romantic tradition, absorbing contemporary influences and elements of Impressionism to intensify the emotional realism of his characters, often centered on heroines and tragic endings. His long collaboration with librettists such as Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa was decisive for the dramatic effectiveness of his operas. Despite personal episodes and losses within his editorial circle that affected his life and output, Puccini’s legacy rests on the durability of his scores and the influence he exerted on modern operatic dramaturgy.
