Giulio Natta was an Italian chemical engineer whose academic career and research transformed the polymer industry. A professor at several institutions — including the Politecnico di Milano, the University of Pavia and the Politecnico di Torino — Natta applied crystallography and physical-chemistry techniques to clarify molecular structures and develop new catalysts. His best-known work was the refinement of the catalyst that became known as Ziegler–Natta, a conceptual collaboration with the discoveries of Karl Ziegler. That contribution made large-scale production of high-density polymers possible, with profound effects on the manufacture of plastics such as polypropylene and a revolutionary impact on industrial and consumer sectors. Recognized by the scientific community, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963, shared with Ziegler, and the Lomonosov Gold Medal in 1969. The author of works on industrial chemistry and stereochemistry, he left a technical and terminological legacy — including terms coined by his wife to describe arrangements in polymers. His career also belongs to the broader context of twentieth-century Italian history, with professional episodes shaped by institutional changes of the era. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1950s, Natta remained scientifically active until his retirement and died in 1979.
