Giuseppe Ungaretti was one of the leading Italian poets of the 20th century, a central figure of modernism and a precursor of the movement known as hermeticism. Born in Alexandria to an Italian family, he was culturally formed between symbolism and Parnassianism, drawing close to writers such as Baudelaire and Rimbaud and undergoing literary experiences in Paris that shaped his concise, imagistic style. His direct experience in the First World War inspired Il porto sepolto and deeply influenced his poetry, which is marked by concision, the elimination of punctuation, and the search for a poetic self confronting pain and death. In Allegria di naufragi he reaffirmed this poetics, exploring human solidarity and the ambivalence between horror and survival. Over the course of his career he occupied complex public and private positions: he worked for newspapers, briefly adhered to fascism in the 1920s, and later maintained institutional ties with universities. He taught at the University of São Paulo (1936–1942) and, after returning to Italy, was appointed professor of Modern Literature at the University of Rome. His work influenced later generations and, alongside figures such as Eugenio Montale and Salvatore Quasimodo, helped renew Italian poetry in the 20th century, with a legacy recognized in expressive concision and reflection on the human condition.
