Glenn Theodore Seaborg was an American chemist whose work synthesizing and investigating transuranium elements shaped twentieth-century nuclear chemistry. A co-discoverer of ten elements — including plutonium, americium, curium and the element later named after him, seaborgium — Seaborg also identified more than a hundred isotopes and developed the actinide concept, which reorganized the actinide series on the periodic table. He spent decades at the University of California, Berkeley, as a researcher and professor and served as chancellor from 1958 to 1961. During World War II and the postwar period he contributed to the Manhattan Project by devising the plutonium separation process and was a pioneer in applying radiochemistry to medicine, helping discover isotopes used in diagnosis and treatment, such as iodine-131. In public life he advised U.S. presidents and chaired the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (1961–1971), advocating civilian nuclear power and arms control. He took part in initiatives and treaties on test limitations and non-proliferation and was a prolific author of books and scientific papers. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1951, he received dozens of honorary doctorates and left a lasting legacy in science: element names, institutions and even an asteroid perpetuate his influence in chemistry and science policy.
