Gloria Stuart was an American actress, visual artist, and activist, active in pre-Code cinema and widely remembered for her return to stardom in Titanic (1997), a role that brought her late critical recognition and nominations for the Academy Award and Golden Globe. She began her career in school and university theatre in California, signed with Universal in 1932, and appeared in notable films of the period such as The Old Dark House (1932) and The Invisible Man (1933), as well as in 1930s musicals with Shirley Temple. From 1940 she reduced her film work to focus on regional theatre and, in the mid-1940s, left the screen temporarily to devote herself to the graphic and applied arts: she worked as a fine printer and produced paintings, screenprints, miniature books, bonsai, and découpé. Her works are included in the collections of institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She gradually returned to acting from the 1970s, taking small roles until her acclaim in Titanic at age 86. At the same time, she had a long career as a political and environmental activist, cofounding the Screen Actors Guild and participating in antifascist movements in Hollywood—elements that influenced the film industry and shaped her public life.
