James Gordon Brown is a Scottish politician who served as Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2010. Before becoming prime minister, he was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1997, a post in which he oversaw major changes to Britain’s economic framework, including transferring responsibility for setting interest rates to the Bank of England and reorganizing financial supervision. As chancellor he presided over a prolonged period of sustained economic growth, although he was criticized for increased reliance on credit and for controversial measures such as the sale of gold reserves. As prime minister he led the government’s response to the 2008–2009 global financial crisis, promoting bailout packages and partial nationalizations of banks to stabilize the financial system. His administration passed significant legislation, including the world’s first Climate Change Act and the Equality Act 2010. After Labour’s defeat in the 2010 general election he resigned his posts. He later played a prominent role in the campaign against Scottish independence in 2014 and has remained active in public life through books and contributions to debates on economics and international politics.
