Gordon G. Liddy was an attorney, FBI agent, public servant and American media personality best known for his central role in the Watergate scandal. As the operational chief of the unit known as the "White House Plumbers" during the Nixon administration, he organized and led the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate building in 1972, an act that triggered investigations culminating in President Nixon’s resignation. Convicted of conspiracy, burglary and illegal wiretapping, he served about four and a half years in federal prison.

Before Watergate, Liddy had a career at the FBI, where he rose to a supervisory post in Washington, and also worked as a lawyer and prosecutor in New York, taking part in high-profile anti‑drug operations. After serving his sentence he reinvented himself as an author, speaker and radio host, maintaining a frequent media presence, including public debates with figures such as Timothy Leary and appearances on Fox News.

His legacy combines public service and clandestine action that exemplified the excesses of the era’s politics, along with a post‑prison career that established him as a controversial and influential figure in late 20th‑ and early 21st‑century American political culture.
