Alexander Gordon Jump was an American television actor best known for playing Arthur “Big Guy” Carlson on the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, a role that brought him wide recognition from the late 1970s into the early 1980s and in the subsequent series The New WKRP in Cincinnati. His television career also includes memorable appearances on popular shows such as Soap (as boss Tinkler), Diff'rent Strokes, and seasons of sitcoms and dramas including The Love Boat, Night Court, and Seinfeld. He began his career in local television and theater before moving to Los Angeles, gaining experience as a host, producer, and director at regional stations. From the 1960s onward he took recurring roles and guest spots that established him as a character actor in comedies and situation comedies. Around the turn of the 1990s Jump also became widely known to the public as the “Maytag repairman” in commercials, a role he maintained until stepping away. His performances often balanced humor and humanity, and he maintained that television could convey uplifting values. Later he was involved in productions aimed at the community of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to which he had converted. He is remembered by the public for his charismatic characters and for his steady presence on series that shaped American television from the 1970s through the 1990s.
