Gordon Matta-Clark was an American artist active mainly in the 1970s whose work redefined the relationship between architecture, urban space, and artistic practice. Trained as an architect, he rejected conventional practice and developed the concept of “anarchitecture,” examining voids, gaps, and urban leftovers through site interventions, cuts in buildings, and performative actions. His best-known works involve radical architectural dismantlings: circular and conical cuts made in buildings slated for demolition—interventions that questioned ownership, use, and the memory of the urban fabric. Projects such as Fake Estates, in which he bought small residual lots in New York City and documented them, and public pieces like Days End and Conical Intersect, underscore his interest in marginalized territories. In addition to sculptures and “building cuts,” Matta-Clark worked in photographic and video documentation and publications, and co-founded the artist-run restaurant FOOD, a space that combined communal dining and the downtown art scene. His work influenced public art practices, urban research, and contemporary curating; his archive is preserved in institutions such as the Canadian Centre for Architecture.
