Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler was a German engineer and industrialist recognized as one of the pioneers in the development of internal combustion engines and the manufacture of motor vehicles. Together with his long-time collaborator Wilhelm Maybach, he devoted himself to designing small, high-speed engines for transportation applications, creating solutions that enabled engines to be adapted to different vehicles. In the 1880s they conceived a high-revving liquid-fuel engine—nicknamed by Daimler “Daimler’s Dream”—and in 1885 produced a vertical version that was mounted on a two-wheeled frame, regarded as the first internal combustion motorcycle (the Petroleum Reitwagen). Those advances also made it possible to fit engines into carriages and boats. In 1890 they converted the partnership into a joint-stock company, Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, which began selling automobiles in 1892. Daimler’s business career included disputes with shareholders and a brief departure from management, but his technical work and innovations laid important foundations for the modern automotive industry. His legacy lies in the creation of compact, high-speed engines and in promoting personal and industrial motorization, directly influencing the development of cars and motorcycles in the following decades.
