Gottlob Ernst Schulze was a German philosopher best known for his skeptical critique of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy and for influencing the development of German idealism. A university professor in Helmstedt and later Göttingen, he became known for works such as Grundriß der philosophischen Wissenschaften and, above all, the anonymously published Aenesidemus (1792), in which he dismantled arguments of Hans Karl Reinhold’s so‑called “elemental philosophy” and mounted a critique later taken up by Schopenhauer and others.

His reading exposed an apparent contradiction in Kant’s thesis about the “thing‑in‑itself” and the applicability of causality, contributing to the epistemological crisis that prompted responses from Fichte and helped fuel post‑Kantian movements. Later Schulze softened his initial skepticism and moved toward more realistic positions, developing a “natural realism” and affinities with Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi’s philosophy of faith.

As a teacher he directly impacted students such as Arthur Schopenhauer and influenced thinkers including Johann Friedrich Herbart and Jakob Friedrich Fries. His output also included treatises on logic, psychological anthropology, and ethics, establishing him as a significant figure in the transition from Criticism to German Idealism.
