Alexandra Nikolaevna of Russia was a Russian grand duchess, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. Known at the Saint Petersburg court for her beauty and cheerful temperament, she became noted as a musician: she studied with the renowned soprano Henriette Sontag until pulmonary problems affected her voice. Within the family she was called “Adini” and was said to be the emperor’s favorite daughter. On 28 January 1844 she married Prince Frederick William of Hesse‑Cassel, a match approved by her parents and, according to accounts, preceded by an unexpected affection on the part of the groom for Alexandra. Later diagnoses indicated severe tuberculosis; pregnancy worsened her condition. The premature delivery resulted in the death of the infant shortly after birth and, hours later, in Alexandra’s death, her reported last words being “Be happy.” Her early death deeply affected the imperial family; her parents’ mourning would last for the rest of their lives. In her memory there is a memorial bench with a small sculpture and preserved apartments at the Peterhof Palace. A diamond‑studded fabric from her wardrobe was made into a tiara that came to form part of the House of Hesse’s bridal tradition.
