Paul Friedrich was Grand Duke of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin from 1837 to 1842. The son of Friedrich Ludwig and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia, he was a maternal grandson of Tsar Paul I and a member of a family linking the German and Russian royal houses. He was educated in Geneva, Jena and Rostock and became heir in 1819. During his short reign he promoted improvements to the duchy's infrastructure and judicial system, and oversaw the transfer of the capital from Ludwigslust to Schwerin—measures intended to modernize local administration. In his youth he showed a pronounced military inclination and close rapport with his troops, although he later curtailed that activity. He married Princess Alexandrine of Prussia in 1822, with whom he had several children, including his successor Frederick Francis II. He also had acknowledged offspring born out of wedlock. Paul Friedrich died in 1842 from influenza contracted while taking part in fighting a fire in the capital.
