Ferdinando III (Ferdinando Giuseppe Giovanni Baptista) was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine and Grand Duke of Tuscany in two periods (1790–1801 and 1814–1824). He succeeded his father Leopold when the latter ascended the imperial throne; his rule was shaped by the upheavals of the Napoleonic era, which forced him into exile and cost him the duchy temporarily. As part of the territorial rearrangements of the time, he received Salzburg in compensation and later the new Duchy of Würzburg, adopting titles such as prince-elector and grand duke in those contexts until the reorganization of the Holy Roman Empire. After Napoleon’s fall, Ferdinando was restored to Tuscany in 1814, but later faced territorial reductions, including the loss of the Duchy of Lucca in 1815. His career illustrates the dynastic compensations and territorial realignments in early 19th-century Central Europe. He married twice and left significant offspring, including Leopold II, his successor in Tuscany. He died in Florence in 1824, leaving a legacy tied to the restoration of former states and the political transition from the Napoleonic period to the post-Napoleonic order.
