Grant Hart was an American musician best known as the drummer and co-vocalist of the influential punk rock band Hüsker Dü. As co-writer of notable songs — including “The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill” and “Turn on the News” — he helped shape a sound that brought punk closer to melody, broadening hardcore’s lyrical range with narratives that ranged from teenage alienation to more literary stories, as in “Diane.” After Hüsker Dü disbanded in 1988, Hart began a solo career with the album Intolerance and then formed the band Nova Mob, moving to guitar and lead vocals; after that trio dissolved he established himself as a solo artist. In addition to music, he designed many of Hüsker Dü’s album covers and those of other bands, showing work in the visual field as well. Hart’s career earned critical recognition for his songwriting and vocal contrast with partner Bob Mould, and was also marked by internal conflicts that helped bring the band to an end. His work remained influential for later generations of American alternative and indie rock.
