Grayson Perry is an English artist whose work combines ceramics, tapestry, text and performance with a strong autobiographical element and social commentary. He became widely known for his classic-shaped pots decorated in bright colors that set a traditional aesthetic against contemporary themes, and for appearing in public dressed in women’s clothing, often in the guise of the character “Claire.”
His work probes personal memories, gender identity and critiques of British norms, also drawing on references from ceramic folk traditions and Greek iconography. Perry also works in printmaking, embroidery, drawing and audiovisual media, and has published books including autobiographies, essays on art and a graphic novel.
Awarded the Turner Prize in 2003, he has held solo exhibitions at institutions such as The Andy Warhol Museum, the Wallace Collection and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. His works are part of the permanent collections of major museums, including Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Beyond his studio practice, Perry is active publicly as a presenter and curator: he delivered the BBC Reith Lectures in 2013 and has served in institutional roles, notably as Chancellor of the University of the Arts London. His career combines media visibility, critical production and influence on cultural debates in the United Kingdom.
