Gertrude Augusta “Gussie” Moran was an American tennis player active in the 1940s and 1950s whose career peaked with a fourth-place national ranking in the United States and regular appearances at major tournaments. A prominent competitor on the amateur circuit, she won titles at the US Indoor Championships in singles, doubles and mixed doubles in 1949, and delivered notable performances at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Her notoriety extended beyond the courts because of an incident at Wimbledon in 1949, when a competition outfit designed by Ted Tinling revealed lace from her undergarments and provoked widespread controversy in the press and among the tournament organizers. The episode raised her public profile, earning her nicknames, magazine cover invitations, film appearances and influence on the sport’s popular culture. After leaving the amateur circuit, Moran worked as a professional in exhibition matches and tennis shows, worked in sports television and radio, launched a line of tennis clothing and contributed to specialist publications.
