Gustav Theodor Fechner was a German physicist, philosopher and experimental psychologist, recognized as the founder of psychophysics. His work sought to measure quantitatively the relationship between physical stimuli and mental sensations, proposing a law—known as Fechner’s law—that describes sensation as a logarithmic function of stimulus intensity within a certain range. This monistic approach attempted to integrate bodily facts and conscious states as two aspects of the same reality, introducing precise methods for psychological investigation.
Beyond psychophysics, Fechner investigated visual phenomena such as the color effect that bears his name, studied synesthesia and devoted himself to experimental aesthetics, applying statistical methods to preferences for shapes and proportions. He also published work in physics and chemistry, translated scientific books and wrote literary and humorous texts under a pseudonym.
The impact of his ideas extended into the twentieth century: his hypothesis about the division of consciousness between hemispheres anticipated later findings in patients with severed corpus callosum, and his emphasis on precise measurement influenced the development of psychology as an experimental discipline. Fechner is today remembered for his methodological legacy and for the pioneering attempt to connect mind and body through quantitative laws.
