Gustav Holst was an English composer, arranger and teacher whose name remains linked to the orchestral suite The Planets, the work that brought him international recognition after the First World War. Trained at and later a faculty member of the Royal College of Music, he developed a personal style shaped by the English folk revival, mystical interests and readings of Eastern literatures such as the Vedas, which influenced important choral works like Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda.

In addition to composing, Holst was active as a performer and educator: he played trombone in opera companies and served as musical director of Morley College (1907–1924), where he established a strong tradition of teaching and concerts. Unable to support himself solely through composition, he balanced performance, teaching and arranging throughout his career.

Holst’s output is varied — including suites for band, choral music, orchestral works and operas — with notable pieces such as St Paul’s Suite, Beni Mora and Hammersmith. Although his reputation declined during his lifetime, his influence on later generations of English composers, among them Tippett and Britten, secured him a lasting legacy.
