Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego is a Colombian economist and politician, known for his journey from militant in the M-19 guerrilla movement to the presidency of Colombia. Trained in economics at the Universidad Externado de Colombia, he transitioned into institutional politics after the demobilization of M-19, helping to found left-wing parties and movements that elevated his national profile.
During his career he served as a city councilor, ombudsman of Zipaquirá, member of the Chamber of Representatives and senator, and was mayor of Bogotá from 2012 to 2015. Founder of the Colombia Humana movement, he ran for the presidency several times and won the 2022 election, an outcome that demonstrates his political ascent and capacity to mobilize popular support.
Petro opposed paramilitarism and became a focal point in debates about corruption and political violence, denouncing connections between state actors and illegal groups. His actions and public controversies — including disputes with rivals and court rulings affecting his career — have made him a polarizing figure in the country.
His legacy combines promotion of social and environmental causes with an uncommon path from armed militancy to democratic leadership, leaving a significant mark on Colombia’s recent political changes.
