H. G. Wells (Herbert George Wells) was a British writer whose work opened the way for modern science fiction and for social debates of the twentieth century. He became known for emblematic novels such as The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds, in which he blended scientific speculation, moral fable and social criticism.
Beyond fantastic fiction, Wells wrote realist novels—such as Kipps and Tono-Bungay—and works of nonfiction, most notably The Outline of History, an ambitious attempt to synthesize the history of humanity. His writings frequently examined ethical dilemmas of science, the tension between nature and nurture and the dangers of modern technology and warfare.
A proponent of socialist ideas and a member of the Fabian Society, he took an active part in the political debates of his time, examining events such as the Russian Revolution and advocating social reorganization through collective, planned solutions. His ability to anticipate innovations—from aircraft and tanks to nuclear weapons and global information networks—established him as one of the principal literary visionaries of the twentieth century.
Wells’s legacy endures both for inventing themes and archetypes of science fiction and for the cultural influence his utopian proposals and social critiques exerted on later generations of writers and thinkers.
