Henry Rider Haggard was a British novelist whose work popularized the adventure novel set in colonial Africa. With an English education and administrative experience as secretary to the governor of Natal and as a commissioner in the Transvaal, Haggard drew on his colonial experiences a repertoire of legends, customs and landscapes that fed plots of exploration, mystery and exoticism. His name became associated with widely read titles, especially King Solomon’s Mines (1885), which secured his financial independence, and She (1887), landmark works of the Victorian imagination about Africa. He also created recurring characters, such as Allan Quatermain, who influenced adventure literature and the development of subgenres like the treasure-romance and exploration fantasy. In addition to a prolific and varied body of novels, Haggard received official recognition, being knighted in 1919. His legacy endures both in popular literature and in film and radio adaptations, and in the influence he exerted on later writers interested in themes of adventure, fictional archaeology and colonial exoticism.
