Hal Holbrook was an American actor whose wide-ranging career in theater, film, and television spanned more than six decades. He rose to prominence early with the one-man show Mark Twain Tonight!, which established his reputation as a performer and earned him the Tony Award for Best Actor in 1966. From that point he became known for turning historical and literary figures into memorable performances. In film, he appeared in features such as The Group (1966) and achieved international recognition for portraying the figure known as “Deep Throat” in All the President’s Men (1976). He worked in a variety of films — from dramas to horror and anthologies — including titles such as Julia, The Fog, and Creepshow, while maintaining a steady presence on television with roles in productions about historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln. In the final phase of his career, Holbrook again drew critical attention for performances in films such as Into the Wild (2007), which brought him significant nominations, and for recurring roles in contemporary series. Over his life he received multiple television awards and left a legacy as a versatile actor, recognized for the power of his solo theater work and his ability to create complex characters.
