François de Lorraine, known as the Duke of Guise, was one of France’s leading military and political figures in the 16th century. Born into the noble house of Lorraine, he made his name as a commander — defending Metz against Charles V, winning at Renty, and capturing Calais in 1558 — victories that brought him great prestige and influence at the court of Henry II.
Raised to high command, he became a central figure in government during the brief prominence of the House of Guise, especially after the coronation of his nephew, Francis II. Alongside his brother the cardinal, he played a decisive role in the monarchy’s policies and at times signed public acts with near-royal authority.
His rise provoked strong reactions from Protestants and political rivals; the Amboise conspiracy (1560) and the subsequent clashes illustrate the religious and factional polarization that marked his final years. Married to Anna d’Este, he left children who continued to shape French politics, notably his son Henry, who inherited the dukedom and the Guise family legacy.
