Hanns‑Martin Schleyer was a prominent German business leader, known for his long service as a representative of employers and industry. Over the course of his career he held the presidencies of two of the most influential private-sector organizations in West Germany: the Confederation of Employers’ Associations and the Federation of Industries. His professional career included senior positions in the automotive industry, most notably at Daimler‑Benz, where he rose to the board and established his reputation as a broker within the business community.
Schleyer also became a controversial public figure because of his conservative positions, his forceful role in labor disputes, and his active participation in the political and union environment of the Federal Republic. His past during the Nazi era—when he belonged to the National Socialist student movement and served as an SS officer—remains a significant part of his biographical profile and of discussions about his legacy.
In 1977 Schleyer was kidnapped and murdered by the terrorist group known as the Red Army Faction (RAF), an episode that culminated in the peak of the so‑called “German Autumn” and left a deep mark on the recent history of West Germany. After his death he received various institutional honors that kept his name in the public sphere.
