Hans Albrecht Bethe was a German‑American theoretical physicist whose career established key foundations of nuclear physics and modern astrophysics. Trained in Germany under Arnold Sommerfeld, Bethe translated concepts from quantum mechanics into practical problems in solids and atomic nuclei, publishing influential papers as early as the 1920s and early 1930s. After emigrating following the rise of Nazism, he settled in the United States, joined the faculty at Cornell, and became a central figure in the theoretical physics community. From the mid‑1930s through the end of World War II he studied nuclear reactions and cross sections, synthesizing and organizing knowledge that became a standard reference in the field. His most notable contribution was the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis—the thermonuclear mechanism that explains energy production in the Sun and other stars—a body of work that earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1967. In subsequent decades Bethe also addressed issues related to the use of nuclear energy, advocating for its peaceful application. Bethe’s legacy encompasses both his scientific output—foundational papers on nuclear reactions and particle physics—and his institutional role at Cornell, where he helped train generations of physicists and helped position the university as a center of excellence in the field.
