Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author whose literary output included short stories, plays, novels, poems and travel writing, but whose fame rests primarily on the literary fairy tales he composed. His collection of 156 stories, published in nine volumes, crossed cultural borders: translated into more than 125 languages, it entered the Western imagination and remains a central repertoire of children’s literature and popular culture. Among his best-known tales are The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl and Thumbelina. These narratives combine apparent simplicity with moral depth, addressing themes such as identity, exclusion, resilience and transformation, and have inspired adaptations for ballet, theater and film. Born into very modest circumstances in Odense, Andersen’s life was marked by social hardship and an education made possible by patrons who funded his schooling and travels across Europe. His contact with court life and the nineteenth-century cultural circulation influenced his work — including novels and travel accounts inspired by journeys to Italy and Switzerland. His literary legacy endures both in critical editions and in artistic and educational adaptations, establishing him as a central figure of nineteenth-century European literature and as an author whose stories continue to be reread by audiences of all ages.
