Hans Kramers was a Dutch theoretical physicist whose contributions helped shape the transition to modern quantum physics. Trained in Leiden, he completed his doctorate under Niels Bohr and Paul Ehrenfest and spent nearly a decade as part of Bohr’s group in Copenhagen, where he worked on fundamental problems in the interaction between radiation and matter. In collaboration with Werner Heisenberg he formulated the well-known Kramers–Heisenberg dispersion formula (1925) and, the following year, took part in the development of the WKB method. He is also associated with the Kramers–Kronig relations, Kramers degeneracy, and the so-called Kramers turnover in thermal reaction theory. In 1948 he introduced ideas of renormalization into quantum field theory in a nonrelativistic context. He held professorships in Utrecht and Leiden, succeeding Paul Ehrenfest, and maintained a connection with Delft University of Technology. He was one of the founders of the Mathematisch Centrum in Amsterdam and supervised students including Tjalling Koopmans. He received honors such as the Lorentz Medal (1947) and the Hughes Medal (1951), leaving a lasting legacy in quantum theory and statistical physics.
