Hans Otto Friedrich Schlossberger was a German physician and researcher notable in immunology, medical microbiology, epidemiology, and antimicrobial chemotherapy. He became known for studies on syphilis, typhus, gas gangrene, diphtheria, erysipeloid, tuberculosis, malaria, and leptospirosis, and for his role as one of Germany’s leading immunologists and bacteriologists in the twentieth century. A medical graduate, he trained with and collaborated with Nobel laureates Paul Ehrlich and Emil von Behring, and spent part of his career at central institutes such as the Paul Ehrlich Institute, the Robert Koch Institute, and the Reichsgesundheitsamt. From 1946 to 1955 he was professor and director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Infection Control at Goethe University Frankfurt, and he also served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine (1952–1953). He edited the journal Medical Microbiology and Immunology and contributed to recent editions of the influential manual Experimental Bacteriology, helping to systematize knowledge in bacteriology and immunology. He was a member of the Leopoldina Academy of Sciences and left an important institutional and bibliographic legacy for German medical microbiology.
