Harold Edward Holt was an Australian politician who served as the 17th Prime Minister of Australia from 1966 to 1967, leading the Liberal Party. Before reaching the nation's highest office, he had a long ministerial career in the governments of Robert Menzies, holding key portfolios such as Immigration, Labour and the Treasury; as Minister for Immigration (1949–1956) he expanded the postwar program and began measures that weakened the “White Australia” policy. As Treasurer, Holt oversaw the creation of the Reserve Bank of Australia and the introduction of the decimal dollar, although he was associated with a credit squeeze in the early 1960s. He became leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister in 1966, subsequently winning an election with a large majority. In foreign affairs, he promoted closer ties with Asia and strengthened the alliance with the United States, increasing Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War — a stance that provoked domestic controversy. His government also changed constitutional aspects concerning Indigenous affairs and withdrew Australia from the pound sterling area. Holt disappeared while swimming in December 1967 and was presumed dead; the unexpected loss shaped his legacy and led to commemorations in his honour, including public installations that recall his figure.
