Harold Louis “Doc” Humes Jr. was an American writer and journalist, known as one of the founders of the influential literary magazine The Paris Review. Active in literary circles in the 1950s and 1960s, he published two novels, The Underground City (1958) and Men Die (1959), and was once named by contemporary critics as one of the promising young novelists.
Trained in fiction writing at Harvard and with stints at institutions such as MIT and in various positions in Europe, Humes pursued an unorthodox career: he directed a film, designed a paper house as an alternative form of housing, and managed performers including Lord Buckley. He was also involved in political campaigns and in actions against cultural regulations such as New York’s cabaret cards.
In the 1960s his course changed radically after experiments with LSD and erratic behavior that pulled him away from literary production. In subsequent decades he reinvented himself as a charismatic presence on college campuses, combining erudition with mental instability, and remained active in antiwar movements and in initiatives for addiction treatment.
His legacy is mixed: on one hand, the cofounding of a magazine that influenced literary culture; on the other, a life marked by episodes of personal decline, documented government surveillance, and a gradual abandonment of writing.
