Haroldo de Campos was a Brazilian poet, essayist, professor and translator, recognized as a central figure in national literature from the 1950s onward. He descended from the modernist tradition while remaining an innovator, and helped found the Noigandres group with Augusto de Campos and Décio Pignatari— a movement that launched concrete poetry in Brazil and renewed the poem’s formal and visual practices. Holding a doctorate from the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo, he taught at PUC-SP and served as a visiting professor at universities in the United States, establishing a role both as an academic and a critic. His critical and theoretical work engages with experimental language practices and with translation as a creative operation that values rhythm, sound and structure as well as literal meaning. As a translator he rendered into Portuguese canonical authors—from Homer and Dante to Mallarmé, James Joyce, Goethe, Mayakovsky and Octavio Paz—contributing to the reception of those voices in Brazil. He received international recognition, including mention in the Encyclopædia Britannica and the Octavio Paz Prize for Poetry and Essay (1999). His legacy endures in the revitalization of poetic strategies and in his influence on generations of poets and translators.
