Heinrich von Treitschke was a German historian and political polemicist who played a central role in the intellectual consolidation of the Second Reich. A university professor at Freiburg, Kiel, Heidelberg and Berlin, he became known for linking historical research to political ends, defending Prussian primacy in a unified Germany and supporting the policies of Otto von Bismarck. His principal work, Deutsche Geschichte im Neunzehnten Jahrhundert (five volumes), circulated widely among the educated bourgeoisie and aimed to legitimize Prussia’s position while criticizing the autonomy of the southern states, especially Bavaria.
An active politician, he served in the Reichstag from 1871 to 1884, first as a member of the National Liberal Party and later as an independent. Admired by part of the conservative establishment, Treitschke was also known for extreme nationalist positions: he advocated German colonialism and adopted anti‑Marxist and anti‑minority rhetoric that included attacks on Catholics, Poles and Jews. Those stances contributed to his notoriety and intellectual controversy.
Beyond his editorial and academic impact, Treitschke left a legacy as a trainer of generations of imperial administrators and politicians, and he was criticized for methodological bias and for turning history into a political instrument.
