Heinz Hilpert (Heinrich Otto Gustav Hilpert) was a central figure in German theatre from the 1920s to the 1960s, known as a director, actor and occasionally a filmmaker and screenwriter. Initially trained to be a teacher and later in philology, history, fine arts and philosophy, he began his career at the Volksbühne in Berlin and established himself under the influence of Max Reinhardt and Carl Zuckmayer, whose plays he staged several times. In the late 1920s and early 1930s he took on prominent positions: director at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, where he directed important premieres such as Hauptmann von Köpenick and works by Ödön von Horváth. During National Socialism he held leadership posts in Berlin and Vienna (Theater in der Josefstadt), a period in which he sought to preserve a measure of artistic freedom despite political pressures. After World War II he faced professional difficulties because of his activity during the Nazi era, but he rebuilt an active career in cities such as Zurich, Frankfurt, Salzburg and especially Göttingen, where he led the local Deutsches Theater until 1966 and established a reputation as a teacher, training actors including Götz George. His papers and legacy are preserved at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
