Helen Elizabeth Clark is a New Zealand politician who served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1999 to 2008. The daughter of farmers from Waikato and a graduate in Political Science from the University of Auckland, Clark also completed postgraduate and doctoral studies and later taught at the same university before entering Parliament in 1981. A longtime member of the Labour Party, she held ministerial posts in the governments of David Lange and Geoffrey Palmer, including Health and Labour. She became leader of the Labour Party in 1993 and led the coalitions that defined her period as prime minister, during which she also held the portfolios for Arts, Culture and Heritage, as well as responsibility for the country’s intelligence service. Domestically, her agenda prioritized social policies and institutional reforms, such as the creation of the Supreme Court and the review of honorific titles. In foreign policy, she was noted for New Zealand’s independent stance, most notably refusing to join the invasion of Iraq without a UN mandate. After leaving government, Clark remained active on the international stage, being named among the most influential women by the BBC in 2013 and maintaining significant diplomatic engagement, for example with China.
