Helen Duncan was a Scottish medium whose notoriety stems chiefly from the legal disputes and controversies surrounding her alleged spiritual materializations. She rose to prominence in the 1920s–1930s by conducting seances in which she claimed to emit “ectoplasm” and allow the appearance of spirit guides; investigators’ inquiries and photographs revealed objects and figures that were fraudulent, including dolls and masks. Researchers and chemists examined samples of the “material” Duncan produced and found substances such as cloth, egg white, and paper, leading to conclusions of fraud on several occasions. Encounters with investigators included public episodes of hysteria and an initial refusal to submit to further examination, incidents that became part of the record concerning her practices. Duncan’s case had legal repercussions: in 1944 she was arrested and convicted under an archaic law against witchcraft, becoming notable as one of the last people prosecuted under that statute. Her name remains linked to debates among spiritualism, psychical research, and fraud, and continues to be cited in studies of mediumistic practices and the social and legal responses to alleged paranormal manifestations.
