Hélène Carrère d’Encausse was a French historian of Georgian origin, known for her work on Russia and the Soviet Union. The author of influential studies such as L’empire éclaté (1978), she focused on national problems and the dynamics of the Soviet empire, contributing to the understanding of the ethnic and political tensions that marked the twentieth century. Her academic and editorial career established her as an authority in Russian studies in France and abroad; several of her works were translated into languages such as German and published by European presses. In addition to her historical writing, she held prominent positions in French cultural institutions. In 1999 she was elected Perpetual Secretary of the Académie Française, a post she held until her death in 2023, which increased her intellectual visibility and institutional influence. She was also the mother of the writer Emmanuel Carrère. Carrère d’Encausse’s legacy remains connected to the renewal of the debate on nationality and empire in contemporary historiography.
