Heleno de Freitas was a Brazilian centre‑forward who became one of the most striking names in South American football in the 1940s and 1950s. Trained as a lawyer, he was noted for refined technique, mobility and a keen eye for goal, scoring 209 goals in 233 matches for Botafogo and becoming an idol at the club before the Garrincha era. For the national team he played 18 times and scored 15 goals, finishing as top scorer of the 1945 South American Championship. Known as much for his talent as for his explosive temperament, Heleno was notorious for on‑field confrontations, expulsions and disputes with teammates and coaches, earning the label of a “trouble star.” His career included spells at Fluminense, Boca Juniors, Vasco da Gama — where he was part of the Expresso da Vitória — and periods in Colombia, as well as brief stints with Santos and América. Despite the controversies and his omission from the 1950 World Cup, his image remained vivid in literature and football memory: episodes of genius and rebellion inspired chroniclers such as Eduardo Galeano and admirers like Gabriel García Márquez. Heleno’s legacy combines technical brilliance, leadership on the pitch and the tragic figure of a gifted athlete whose career was disrupted by indiscipline.
